Worth knowing

A deck is the hardest surface to keep finished

A deck takes sun all summer, snow sitting on it all winter, and furniture and shoes dragged across it. That is why deck finishes do not last as long as paint on a wall, and why the useful question is how the finish will be kept up.

The choice that matters most is solid against penetrating. A solid stain or deck paint gives real color and hides gray wood, and on a walking surface it eventually lifts and has to be stripped before the next coat. A semi-transparent stain fades instead of peeling, so the next round is a clean and a coat.

Cleaning is not optional. Stain over a deck that was not cleaned and brightened sits on loose gray fiber, and it comes away with that fiber.

What your deck is telling you

Four things worth
a phone call.

Gray, fuzzy boards

Sun breaks down the surface of the wood. Stain over it sticks to fiber that is already coming loose.

Stain peeling in flakes

A solid finish on a walking surface eventually lifts, and then it has to be stripped before the next coat.

Water soaking straight in

Sprinkle some water on a board. If it darkens and soaks in at once, the finish is gone.

Soft wood at a post

Push a screwdriver into it. Rot is a carpentry repair, and no finish fixes it.
