Worth knowing

Sills and doors take the most weather

Window sills sit flat, hold rain and snow, and face the sun. They are usually the first painted wood on a house to fail, and the cheapest to keep up if they are caught early.

Doors need all six sides coated. Leaving the top and bottom edges bare lets the door soak up moisture, swell and start to stick in its frame.

Trim paint is harder than wall paint so it can take knocks and cleaning, and it shows every flaw underneath. That is why trim gets filled, caulked and sanded between coats.

Signs your windows and doors need paint

Four things worth
a phone call.

Bare wood on a sill

Sills hold water and sun more than any other part of a window. Bare wood there rots first.

A window painted shut

Paint built up in the joints glues the sash in place. It can be cut free and repainted properly.

A faded front door

A door that faces the sun fades and cracks well before the rest of the house.

Gaps at the trim

Paint will not bridge a gap. An open joint lets water in and shows as a dark line.
