Worth knowing

Exterior paint lasts as long as the prep under it

An exterior repaint rarely fails because the paint was cheap. It fails because it went onto something it could not stick to: chalky old coating, dust, mildew, a glossy surface nobody dulled, or bare wood nobody primed. The washing and the scraping decide how long the job lasts.

Water from behind is the other cause. Paint peeling in one area usually means something is wetting the wood: a failed caulk joint, a gutter running over, or bare end grain soaking it up. We look for that before we price the painting, because paint over wet wood lifts again.

Paint also needs a dry surface and the temperature printed on the can. In Wisconsin that means outside work is planned around the warmer months, and inside work is a good fit for the winter.

Signs your siding needs paint

Four things worth
a phone call.

Paint peeling in sheets

Sheet peeling means it never bonded, or water is getting in behind it. Painting over it without finding out repeats it.

Chalk on your hand

Rub the siding. A white film means the old coating has broken down and the surface needs washing and priming.

Bare wood on the sunny side

One side of the house almost always goes first, and it needs more prep than the other three.

Split caulk at the trim

Open joints let water behind the paint, and water behind the paint is what lifts it from underneath.

Questions

Asked before
this job gets booked.

Both, depending on the surface. Spraying lays an even coat on siding and gets into rough texture. Trim, doors and anything next to glass are brushed. The prep matters more than the tool.
Yes, and then we let it dry. A coat over a surface that is still wet underneath will not hold.
Not if you want it to last. Loose paint has to come off to a sound edge first, because the new coat is only as attached as whatever is under it.
It depends on the siding, how much sun and weather each side gets, and the prep. We will tell you what we see on your house when we come out to look.
