Worth knowing

Kitchens, bathrooms and basements each need something different

Kitchen walls carry a film of cooking grease, most of all near the stove. Paint rolled over grease lets go, so kitchens get cleaned and dulled before the first coat.

Bathrooms need a paint and a sheen that can take steam every day. Mildew has to be killed and washed off first, because paint over it only hides it for a while.

Basement walls are often concrete block or poured concrete, which can hold moisture. If water is coming through a wall, paint will not stop it, and we will tell you if we see signs of that before you spend money on a coat.

When a room is due

Four things worth
a phone call.

Patches showing through

Filler that was never primed shows as a dull spot once the light hits it.

Marks that no longer wash off

Scrubbing a flat finish wears it shiny in patches, and then it needs a fresh coat.

Peeling or mildew in a bathroom

Steam lifts paint that was not made for a wet room, and mildew grows back through paint laid over it.

A color you have stopped seeing

Rooms fade slowly. Hold a sheet of white paper against a wall you think is white.

Questions

Asked before
this job gets booked.

No. We work room by room, so the rooms we are not in stay usable. We tell you which rooms are off limits before we start.
We move what can be moved safely to the middle of the room and cover it. Anything fragile or valuable is better moved by you, and we point that out when we come to look.
With the can or the color code, yes. Without it we can have a chip from a hidden spot scanned, though aged paint does not always match exactly.
Yes. A dark color going lighter usually takes a primer first, and we include that in the estimate when we see the room.
