Worth knowing

New drywall needs primer first

Fresh drywall paper and joint compound do not take paint the same way. Without a primer made for new drywall, the joints and patches show through as dull stripes, a problem known as flashing.

New construction is also the easiest time to paint well. There is no furniture to move and nothing to protect but the floors and windows, so spraying walls and ceilings and back-rolling them gives an even finish quickly.

The part that needs planning is the order of the trades. Telling us when the flooring, cabinets and fixtures go in lets us plan the coats around them.
